The band's origins began in the summer of '96. Sometime in July of that year, Ed Mahiko had a summer party at his home in Morgan Hill, CA. It's a great place for summer barbeques because the kids can go swimming while the adults do their own thing. A few months earlier, his cousin Augie Kim had asked Ed to teach him to play bass, and Aug was determined to get better. Aug brought his friends, Ed Salvador and Reis Santana and their families, to the party.
The guys started to jam a few tunes. It was pretty rough (ah, make that VERY rough!), but they all admitted it was fun, and that they should do it again. From that point forward, the guys met once a week to practice, with few exceptions. Ed (Salvador) mentioned the Sunday Jam at the Templebar in Berkeley. He said it was an "open mic," so they decided to check it out.
The Sunday Jam on Sunday, September 1, 1996 (Labor Day weekend) at the Templebar in Berkeley marked the first public appearance of the yet-to-be-named ShoreBreak band. Uncle Kem Kanikapila (Loong) invited the band back to play on a Saturday night. The band accepted. After that first Saturday night (September 14, 1996), Uncle Kem invited the band back for the next few months.
By November of 1996, the guys realized they were serious about doing this, and Ed (Salvador) suggested coming up with a name for the band. They all came up with ideas, and Ed's (Salvador) suggestion of ShoreBreak was voted in as the band name.
At the time, the band only consisted of Ed Mahiko, Ed Salvador, Augie Kim and Reis Santana. Ed (Mahiko) and Augie's other cousin, Keoki Dacoscos, was playing with a band called Mo'opuna. Keoki expressed an interest in "jamming" with the band, and by January 1997, he was voted in as the fifth band member.
ShoreBreak's sixth member, Andy Gutierrez, joined the band in the 2004-2005 timeframe. Because Ed Mahiko's been tied up with an extended contract with Norwegian Cruise Lines America in Hawaii, the band needed a rhythm guitarist/vocalist to take his place during his absences.
Honorable mention goes to Carlene Santana, the band's sound engineer, and Eric Salvador, Ed's son, who's been our backup musician for those times when one of us can't make it (mahalos, dude!).
